Kameyama Hachimangu

Kameyama Hachimangu

Central Sasebo

Long-beloved shrine known by locals as Hachiman-san

Kameyama Hachimangu, located near Sasebo City Hall, is the biggest shrine of Sasebo City and one of the "Nagasaki's Sanja Mairi" shrines (the custom of the new year is to visit the three main shrines): Suwa Shrine in Nagasaki City, Kotengu Shrine in Omura City, and Kameyama Hachimangu. Five deities are enshrined;: Emperor Ojin, Emperor Chuai, Empress Jingu, Emperor Nintoku, and the deity Ukemochi. It is believed to be beneficial for warding off bad luck, fulfilling one's wishes, safe child delivery, prosperous business, and family safety. Since the Meiji era, the shrine was also worshipped as the guardian god of Sasebo City, home of a major military port.
