Kuroshima, the island located in the southeast of the Hirado island chain, off the coast of Sasebo Port.
~ Settlement of the people who kept the faith praying to Maria Kannon at the Buddhist temple after moving to the redevelopment site of the ranch of the Hirado domain. ~
In the nineteenth century, some of the hidden Christians in various parts of Nagasaki prefecture found out that migration to Kuroshima was encouraged by the goverment to redevelop former farmland. So they chose the place where it seemed to be able to coexist with the existing villagers and moved there. Praying to a statue of Maria made like a Kannon(Goddess of Mercy) at the Buddhist temple that they ostensibly belonged to, they secretly maintained the Christian community. After the lift of the ban on Christianity, they returned to Catholicism and their "latency" came to an end by building the church in the center of the island. It was registered as a World Heritage Site as one of "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Region".
