The place where the very first Mass was held in Kuroshima.
The hidden Christians in different places in Nagasaki moved to Kuroshima where the persecution was not so severe, and kept their faith in secret disguised as Buddhists for about eighty years. When Ohura Cathedral was built in Nagasaki in 1864, Kichidayu and Daikichi Deguchi, a father and son, heard about the priests sent from Rome being there, went across Nagasaki risking their lives to see the missonaries to tell about six hundred Christians hidden in Kuroshima. Thereafter, Christians in Kuroshima resurrected Christianity, and having a foreign priest on the island, they had the very first Mass at the house of Deguchi's in 1872, which made it a very important historical place for Christianity.
※ There are in-island guided tours by a guide living on the island explaining the history of Kuroshima.
