Chi-no-Kohjima Shrine

地の神島神社

Ojika

The Torii Gate that stands facing the ocean.

This shrine, said to be founded in the 700's praying for the safe voyage of the Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty, has a Torii gate that stands on the rocky shore where a stone stairway comes down, watching over the ships passing by. It is the pair to Oki-no-Kohjima on the opposite shore of Nozaki Island, and both shrines face each other across the sea.
