Solemn gothic architecture/Soaring church
Many Christians emigrated to Sasebo, and Sasebo Roman Catholic Church was built in 897.
The church that was established in Tanigo town in 1899 had been moved to the current place in 1931. This church miraculously survived the Great Sasebo Air Raid in the Pacific War.
Many models of ships are displayed.
The history and activities of the former navy and the Maritime Self Defense Force are explained in an easily understandable manner, and also the models of ships and other historical materials are displayed.
Solemn cathedral with 400 thousands of bricks
Kuroshima Cathedral was established by the Christians who emigrated here in the period of Bunka/Bunsei. The base is made of Kuroshima stones (granite) and 400 thousands of bricks are used. This solemn cathedral was consecrated in 1902.
Japan's biggest ceiling aquarium "New Penguin Hall"
The Penguin Hall has the Japan's biggest ceiling aquarium. Almost all of the ceiling of the first floor is made of aquarium, so the visitors can observe swimming penguins from beneath the aquarium. Elephants and other animals can be observed in the zoo. Also many kinds of plants can be seen - especially the rose garden is very famous. In the season of roses, "Rose Festival" is held in the rose garden full of fragrance of the roses. (May and October)
Straight as an arrow, the length of this arcaded street is more than 1 kilometer across the 7 towns in the city central. It is said to be the longest arcaded street in Japan. It is also attracting the attention as this town is so vibrant.
1 minute on foot from Minato Exit of JR Sasebo station. This is the shopping mall having 83 shops, located in front of the sea. Hamburger Shop "Hikari", souvenir shops selling Fukusaya Castella and other tastes of Kyushu are available here. Enjoy shopping and tasty foods in the seaside restaurant and cafe.
